Did you know that Ben Franklin's famous saying, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" was actually fire prevention advice
to his fellow Philadelphians in 1736? The Deer Springs Fire Safe Council is a volunteer organization whose purpose is to help make
our Fire District and the homes of its residents as safe as possible with regard to fire risk. Our endeavor is to disseminate
"ounces of prevention" to our neighbors through education and action.
This is a constantly changing mission. There
are new residents to be educated, new threats to mitigate as homes expand further into the wildland, and more people to reach as the
population of the District increases. The science of fire safety is constantly giving us new and, hopefully, better ways to deal with
the threat as well as a fire event. The Council was formed in order to keep our residents informed and educated with the most current
and applicable information available.
There are two ways you can help the Council provide these "ounces of prevention" to your
fellow residents of the District: become a member of the Council and/or make a tax-deductible donation to help the Council’s ongoing
efforts.
Anyone residing or owning property within the District may apply for membership in the Council. The only requirement
is a desire and willingness to become an active participant in Council activities. Prior to submitting an application, we request
that potential applicants attend two general meetings in order to more fully understand the mission of the Council and its operation.
Applicants will be then be admitted to membership upon receiving a majority vote of a quorum of Directors.
The Council is funded
entirely through the generosity of residents and local business. Printing and mailing educational materials and notices of upcoming
events to approximately 4500 residences has, historically, consumed nearly half of our budget. The Emergency Communications System,
our Reverse 9-1-1, costs several hundred dollars each time it is activated including the annual test message.
The Deer Springs
Fire Protection District has not experienced a major vegetation fire in more than thirty years. As a result, the chaparral is dense
and fast burning fuels abundant. The probability of a significant wildfire is very high. No portion of the district
is immune to the consequences of a major fire any more than the folks in Scripps Ranch were from a fire that started more than 15
miles away in October 2003.
Please help us help you by making a monetary contribution to the effort. Your contribution is fully
tax-deductible and you will receive a receipt. We will gladly accept your donation even if you do not live in the District. Contributions

"I don’t know why it is so difficult to convince ourselves of the need to be prepared so we can take care of our families and ourselves
during an emergency. I can only say, let’s do it. Don’t put it off! "
